Last week I held a 1-2-1 coaching session regarding the development of a strategic network

I was asked ‘What number of connections should I target for’?

Sure…the social theory ‘6° of separation’, who you know & the 5next connections, creates a world where arguably anything is possible…but in reality is it?

In terms of Business Development the continual chase for new revenue may have the unintended consequence of failing to consider what you already have available

So ask yourself ‘How many connections does a network need’?

I would suggest that if you are offering something sophisticated your best method of distribution will be through the ability to have a network where 3rd parties can articulate your value & support you make connections

(Think software, legal services, & professional services per se etc)

Unfortunately existing online tools are not designed to evaluate your relationship in the key currency we are using to build worthwhile connections; this is the currency of ‘know like & trust’

To create this type of feeling across any number of professionals requires a strategic approach rather than random interventions

The challenge is that because of the speed of business life & let’s faces it, it’s only going to get faster, the opportunity to create a strategic network of say more than 100 people is probably unlikely

I would suggest that working with a smaller network of connections, working on shared wins is a major consideration

Don’t disconnect with your existing group but do identify ’win-win’ relationships as this is where the magic will happen
